How to Drive the Ball Better

Being able to be consistent with your driver is one of the ways you can ensure you are well on your way to breaking 100. When it comes to their driver, golfers always think about hitting the ball as far as they possibly can off the tee. Although distance is important, the real focus should be a consistent drive that finds the fairway. It’s when golfers focus purely on distance that hooks and slices wreak havoc on a tee shot. By focusing on hitting the fairway and less on distance, it can mean the difference between having a perfect fairway lie for your second shot compared to losing a stroke getting out of the deep rough.

The best way to improve accuracy and consistency is by doing some regular drills:

  1. The Headcover Drill

This drill consists of placing your headcover under your right armpit (and left if you’re left handed), and ensuring it stays there until the top of the swing where it should fall out naturally. The idea behind this is to ensure that your takeaway is correct, which in turn will help with the angle of attack on the downswing.

  1. The Swing Path Drill

To build on a great takeaway, it’s key to ensure that your swing path is “inside out” which will prevent you coming down on the ball at the point of impact. This will help with a hook and keep your drives more consistent. Simply place an alignment stick at a 65-degree angle sticking out of the ground slightly away from the tee, and as you come down on the ball the aim is to not make contact with it, thus confirming you’re not coming down on the ball from a steep angle or “outside in” motion.
